An old Farmer lived on a farm in the mountains with his young grandson. Each morning Grandpa was up early sitting at the kitchen table reading his book.His grandson wanted to be just like him and tried to imitate him in every way he could.
一个老农住在山上的农场里，和他的孙子一起。每一个早上爷爷都会早早的起来座在厨房的桌子边读书。孙子很爱爷爷，所以他试图模仿爷爷做的每一件事。
One day the grandson asked, 'Grandpa! I try to read the book just like you but I don't understand it, and what I do understand I forget as soon as I close the book. What good does reading the book do?'
一天孙子问爷爷：“爷爷，我试着像你一样的读书但一点都读不懂。我唯一知道的是，我一合上书就什么都忘了。读书有什么用呢？”
The Grandfather quietly turned from putting coal in the stove and replied, 'Take this coal basket down to the river and bring me back a basket of water.'
爷爷平静的望炉子里放完碳后，转过身来，答到：“把这个装碳的篮子拿到河边帮我装一蓝水回来”。
The boy did as he was told, but all the water leaked out before he got back to the house. The grandfather laughed and said, 'You'll have to move a little faster next time,' and sent him back to the river with the basket to try again. 男孩照着做了但回来的时候，篮子里的水都漏光了。爷爷笑了说到：“下次你该跑快一点了”然后让他再去河边试试。
This time the boy ran faster, but again the basket was empty before he returned home. Out of breath, he told his grandfather that it was impossible to carry water in a basket, and he went to get a bucket instead. The old man said, 'I don't want a bucket of water; I want a basket of water. You're just not trying hard enough,' and he went out the door to watch the boy try again.
这回男孩加快了奔跑，但依然他返回的时候篮子都漏空了。上气不接下气的，他对爷爷说用篮子装水是不可能的，所以他拿了一只水桶。老人说“我不想要一桶水，我想要一蓝水。你还要再努力才行啊”。说完，他走到门外看他的孙子是怎样做的。
At this point, the boy knew it was impossible, but he wanted to show his grandfather that even if he ran as fast as he could, the water would leak out before he got back to the house.
这时候，男孩已经知道这是不可能的了，但他想让爷爷看看，即使他跑的最快了，水也依然回漏光的。
The boy again dipped the basket into river and ran hard, but when he reached his grandfather the basket was again empty. Out of breath, he said, 'See Grandpa, it's useless!'
男孩又一次把篮子浸入水中，然后拼命的向家里跑去，当他跑到爷爷站的地方的时候，篮子又一次空了。他大口喘着气，说“瞧，爷爷，这是没用的！”
'So you think it is useless?' The old man said, 'Look at the basket.'
“哦，你觉得是没用的？”老人说“看看篮子”
The boy looked at the basket and for the first time realized that the basket was different. It had been transformed from a dirty old coal basket and was now clean, inside and out.
男孩看着篮子，第一次，他意识到篮子不一样了，它已经从一个肮脏的碳筐变得从里到外都干干净净。
'Son, that's what happens when you read the book. You might not understand or remember everything, but when you read it, you will be changed, inside and out. '
孩子，这就是你读书会发生的现象。你可能什么也看不懂或记不得，但当你在读它的时候，你自己就在变化，从里到外。
